Roger Wins Men’s Singles Final!

During the same weekend that a certain Roger won the Wimbledon title, Roger White produced his own masterclass to win the ALTC Open Singles final. This was the first final of this year’s tournaments and both Roger and Rob Mutchell had come through tough opposition to make this much anticipated final, playing Roy Marshall and Kane Bolton respectively.

The crowd of 50 spectators were instantly treated to epic baseline rallies, powerful winners and delicate touch at the net. Roger proved too strong in the first set, taking it 6-0, and built up a commanding lead in the second. After some gentle ribbing from the crowd, Rob said, “watch these Australian tactics!” and upped his game immediately. None of us quite know what this meant but apparently it helped, leading to a break back and a subsequent hold of serve. However, the late fightback finished in the following game where, despite 3 deuces, Roger held his nerve to win the set 6-2 and take home the trophy.

It was a great final and both players did themselves proud!
