Last weekend saw the second final of the year at ALTC. Rachel Banks and Frankie Bedi took on Penny Allen and Helen Barnett to crown the 2017 Ladies’ Open Doubles champions.
It was a hard fought battle from the very first point between an attacking pair, Rachel and Frankie, and a counter-punching pair, Penny and Helen. In tough conditions, the game was close and about which pair could step up in the big points at the business end of each set.
Rachel and Frankie were able to put together a string of high quality returns to get the deciding break. As a result they ended up taking the first set 7-5. However, Penny and Helen started the second set well, capitalising on their opponents’ mistakes to go up a break. As the match looked destined to go to a third set, Rachel and Frankie played their best when it mattered most to take the final 4 games to take the second set 7-5, and the title!
So, congratulations to both pairs for an excellent final! Thanks to Freddie for umpiring duties and Jill for the presentation.
Frankie and Rachel have now won the Ladies’ Open Doubles event for the 7th consecutive year. A remarkable feat I’m sure’ll agree.
The next finals weekend is not far away (19th and 20th August) and we hope to see you there.
