A big thanks to Keith Lester for all his hard work in organising the World Cup Tournament this year. It is very much appreciated and the tournament was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part.

The Rest of the World Team were the eventual winners on the day - congratulations to Raji, Rachel, Ann, Matt, Nick and Russell!

The Sliding Handicap tournament organised by Len Claremont proved as popular as ever on Sunday 8 May when 24 players turned out to bash their way through 5 sessions of timed rounds of tennis.

The winning pair from each pool played in a very close final in which Marion Lyden and Tim Gotts beat Rachel Banks and Roland McLellan 7-5.

The tournament lived up to its name as Tim Gotts did an amazing slide across the shale court (unintentionally!) to finish almost under the net, covered in shale and almost unscathed – now nicknamed The Sandman!

A very enjoyable tournament, as usual, and an excellent one for new members as it’s a good way of getting to know others in a fun way with no pressure. It’s also good for players of all abilities as the handicap method ensures that ‘even the best can lose’! So look out for it next year and make a note of the date.

The last one-day tournament of the summer was the Davis Cup, held on 12th September, on a beautiful late Summer's day.

Four teams took part & tried to outplay & outguess the format of each of their opponents. Good fun all round and thanks to Steve Savage for organising and to Rachel for being an 'honorary man' for the day to make the numbers even.

The winning team was: Raji Sharma-Drake (capt.), Cathy Painter, Nigel Harris, Rob Ringshaw, Jon Bell, Keith Henderson. Runners up were: Sue Rocca (capt.), Janet Crook, Rachel Banks, Bernie Lines, Matt Banks, Michael Harris.

The 2010 Ashford Tennis Club World Cup Tournament was held during the greatest show of the world - The Football World Cup Final in South Africa. Same four teams were to play each other again over 4 rounds - England Celtic Europe and Rest of World Could this years 5th tournament stop the Celtic team winning it for a 3rd time. Was it to be RofW finally getting to feel the cup.... ??

Well after only 2 rounds it was a 2 team competition between England and RofW for first place and Europe and Celts for 3rd place. Lots of close games on an amazing summer July day but the end result was ... Rest of World finally taking first position with Sarah Dalton as the team captain. England taking 2nd place with a joint captaincy by Rob and Katherine Ringshaw. Celtic team could only manage 3rd place this year captained by Amy Antonioni. Europe lost the battle and took 4th place, with their captain Jeff Howe taking the wooden spoon. Graham Salmon won Person of the Tournament - Well Done.

The day was finished by everyone helping to have a great BBQ outside - special thanks to Ian Mcilrath Julie Brown and of course Pat A big thanks to Alex Sharma Drake for taking the photos. Then into the bar to watch the footie on the TV - COME ON SPAIN !!!!
