1v2 – 6-1, 6-2 (Ashford WIN)
1v1 – 6-0, 6-1 (Ashford WIN)
2v1 – 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 (Leatherhead WIN)
2v2 – 0-6, 2-6 (Leatherhead WIN)
The first match for Jill and Jo was very close, with them just losing the first set on a tie-break. As the second set progressed, the sun started to appear, which made seeing the flight of the ball very tricky at one end. The opposing team settled into their rhythm in the second set, and won comfortably 6-2. Lynda and Susan started strongly against a second pair missing their usual partnership. There were many opportunities for smashing against poor lobs, and Lynda took advantage of the majority of opportunities. The combination of Sue’s serve and Lynda’s volleying was very successful. Lynda and Susan won easily 6-1, 6-2. This match was over at the end of the first set for the other match, so these pairs had a long rest, catching up on the outcome of Murray’s fortunes in the Australian Open.
Second match for Lynda and Susan started in the same way as the first. The opposition didn’t have any answer to the barrage of serves,volleys and overheads, and the first set was won 6-0. There were more rallies in the second set, but Lynda and Susan won comfortably 6-1. They only dropped 4 games in the whole match –
Things didn’t prove so easy for Jill and Jo, and they weren’t able to put away the net and other winning opportunities with enough consistency. Again, the sun was a factor in making the ball hard to see. Unfortunately they lost both sets quite quickly.
However, with a winning draw overall, this was a useful result for the team.
