Coombe Wood Team:

2v2 – 2-6 6-7 (Coombe Wood WIN)
Ashford faced a different surface to their usual hard court with the team playing on artificial grass for the first time in many weeks. The day was quite hot and sunny to begin with and Margaret and Jo welcomed the shade on their court from some overhanging tree branches. As the day wore on, cloud cover provided some relief from the burning sun.
In their first match, Leanne and Ruth lost a marathon first game lasting well over 20 minutes with numerous deuces. Following games continued to have many deuces reflecting the closeness of play but unfortunately, Leanne and Ruth struggled to close out games on the unfamiliar surface going down 1-6. In the second set, Leanne and Ruth started very slowly and were down 0-4 but played well to catch up to be 4-5 before losing the set 4-6.
In Leanne and Ruth’s first set of their second match, they started slowly again and missed a lot of shots losing 1-6. In the second set, whilst they picked up and challenged the other team with better play, they eventually went down 2-6.
Jo and Margaret struggled their first match to adapt to the playing surface and lost the first set 1-6. They started the second set slowly and were 0-4 down. It was then 1-5 before they put in some solid play to reach 6-6 but they eventually lost the tie-break, 6-7.
Their second match was almost identical in game scores with Jo and Margaret losing the first set 2-6. They fought harder in the second set at 1-4 down to reach another tie break before losing the set 6-7.

Ladies 3rd team vs Westside 7 HOME, Sunday 26th June 2011 (Surrey Summer League) WON 4-0
Ashford Team:
Leanne Evans and Penny Allen (1)
Margaret Newman and Jo Greenidge (2)
Westside Team:
Louise Maitland and Estelle Lambert (1)
Marbeth Gordon and partner (2)
1v2 – 6-3 6-0 (Ashford WIN)
1v1 – 7-5 6-0 (Ashford WIN)
2v1 – 6-1 6-3 (Ashford WIN)
2v2 – 6-0 6-2 (Ashford WIN)
The day was quite hot and with almost no wind making conditions good for play except for the soaring temperature.
In their first match, the early games were hard fought and quite even until Leanne and Penny lifted their game and took the first set 6-3. The second set featured a few close games but Leanne and Penny were too strong and won 6-0.
In Leanne and Penny’s first set of their second match, the first few games were a close tussle with some long rallies. Leanne struggled to find her rhythm early on and Westside raced away to a 4-1 lead. Some better play by Leanne and consistent form by Penny saw Ashford close the gap and eventually take the set 7-5. In the second set, Leanne and Penny won the first two games before Estelle withdrew from the match with a back injury after the first two games, leaving Ashford with a 6-0 win.
Jo and Margaret started their first match strongly with Jo’s forehead working well whilst the opposing team struggled with power and consistency. Some consistent tennis by the Ashford pairing saw them take the first set 6-1. In the second set, Westside improved in their play and games went backwards and forward before Jo and Margaret pushed ahead to win 6-3.
Westside’s team in the second match struggled to keep balls in and with some good serving by Margaret and intercepting by Jo, Ashford scored an easy win 6-0 in the first set. The second set saw the Westside pair lift their game but Jo and Margaret played consistently to take the set 6-2.

Ashford 3rd Ladies 3 vs Bourne Club AWAY, Sat 4th June 2011 (Surrey Summer League)
Ashford Team:
Leanne Evans and Penny Allen (1)
Margaret Newman and Jo Greenidge (2)

Bourne Club Team:
Anne French and Omi Sodha (1)
Jane Elliott and Helen Hosie (2)

1v2 – 6-2, 6-2 (Ashford WIN)
1v1 – 6-2, 7-5 (Ashford WIN)
2v1 – 5-7, 4-6 (Bourne Club WIN)
2v2 – 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 [10-8] (Bourne Club WIN)

The day started out overcast and the sun came out just as we arrived. We encountered gusting cross winds which created havoc in most of the games and made play from one end very hard at times.
Leanne and Penny’s first match had very close games in the beginning with lots of juices. Once Leanne and Penny found their rhythm, they closed out the first set 6-2. The second set featured close games again but Leanne and Penny played well together to win 6-2.
In their second match, the sun was shining brightly and the temperature rose to an uncomfortable level. The wind came up stronger for Leanne and Penny and the opposition capitalized on that to slow the game down hitting lots of lobs and slices. Leanne and Penny managed to focus on their game intercepting many high balls to win 6-2. The second set saw Leanne and Penny struggling for energy and subsequently they lost their concentration and played much the same way as their opponents with lots of high loopy balls for the first 5 games. They quickly saw themselves down 1-4 before smartening up their play and returning to their earlier form to win 7-5.

Jo and Margaret started their first match slowly and found themselves down 2-5 and two set points. They lifted their game to win a string of games to even it out at 5-5 but eventually they went down 5-7. In the second set they were 3-2 up when Jo suffered an injury and they struggled to maintain their momentum going down 4-6.
Their second match saw them Jo and Margaret off to a good start and up 4-0 before winning the set 6-4. A lot of poaching by the other team in the next set unsettled them and they went down 2-6. The Championship tie breaker though close, saw them behind all the way and unfortunately, they lost 8-10.
