Ladies 2nd team played St. George’s on Sunday 31 July on their wonderful grass courts and managed to win 4-0 after both pairs just scraped through on tie-breaks. Sue Rocca and Margaret (who had stepped in at the last minute on the day) played brilliantly considering they hadn’t played together before, and Mary and Esther also beat both pairs (one on a tie break). St George’s had a whole support group cheering them on whilst we merely had Esther’s one year old who hadn’t quite got the hang of clapping in the right places and in fact had to be taken as far away as possible by his grandma as he decided to have his first ever tantrum when Esther and I lost a point! However, he soon got over it and enjoyed watching the swans and the fountain on the lake, as we all did afterwards whilst enjoying a drink on the patio! A very enjoyable match and all the more so for having won. |

The Ladies 2nd team turned up for a home match last Sunday (9 January) only to find that Jack Frost had beaten them to it and painted the courts white! However, the sun soon came to the rescue and by 11am it had sufficiently cleared (although we paid dearly for the sun after that as at one end it was almost impossible to see anything – let alone the ball or the lines!
Unfortunately it meant another loss for Ashford as, although they were close games – Janet and Mary took every game to deuce in the first set but only managed to win 2 – and Sue and Sandra closely lost a championship tiebreak against the second pair. So it was an overall loss of 0-4 but still an enjoyable game, and (as the school reports would say) must do better! |

The Ladies 2nd team had an excellent game against Putney IV last week and were extremely fortunate with the weather, but not so fortunate with the result! The team, although in our division, were somewhat ‘out of our league’ and won 4-0. However, we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and had some very competitive tennis with a great many deuces but they were just not going our way.
The courts had only been laid two weeks previously and were an artificial type and we were the first team to play on them. The courts played very well (better than us) and we had a nice lunch so it was a good day despite the result. |

The Ladies 2nd team had a successful start to the winter season today by beating Sheen III 3-1.
Both pairs, Sue and Esther and Lynda and Sandra, managed to experience the rare delight of winning tie-breaks, so the sun shone in more ways than one today, and let hope this win has set the tone for the rest of the winter matches.
Well done, ladies, it seems like your non-playing captain (myself) should stay that way and we might win a few more matches!
