The singles tennis ladder started on the 12th October. We have already had a few challenges and a few matches have already been completed. Start challenging other players and improve your ranking! Remember that the winner must please write their score on the scoreboard and change their ranking position. Please refer to the rules when it comes to changing your positions on the ladder. Have fun!!
What’s the goal?
The ultimate goal of ladder play is to be the player in the top position on the ladder. Also, other goals are to provide an opportunity for players to have fun, meet some new players, and get a chance to work on improving their tennis game. All players will have volunteered to participate in our ladder, therefore, please display good sportsmanship by adhering to the guidelines set to govern fair play.
General Information
The season will run from 12th October 2009 to 31st March 2010.
Players must abide by all LTA and Ashford Tennis Club rules, including our standard court booking procedures. Matches can be played all week round, however maximising Tuesday evening and Sunday afternoons (after tea, +/- 16:30 onwards) are an objective.
In an attempt to make efficient use of the evening booking time slots, please try and arrange your match in the following time slots (however this will not be enforced):
- 18:00/18:15 -> 20:15
- 20:20 -> 22:30
General Entry requirements
Entrants must be a current, fully paid member of Ashford Tennis Club.
The contact details for each player must be available on the membership list, located on the tennis notice board. Each player to provide a telephone number (preferably mobile) and, if possible, an email address where he/she can easily be reached for setting up matches.
If your name and contact details are not on the list, or your details are incorrect, please notify Janet Crook. Janet’s contact details are on the membership list.
Rules
- The initial ranking of the players on the ladder was set up by the Ladder Organiser. These rankings are indicative only, and will get more accurate after 2 or 3 games as people start challenging each other.
- It is up to the challenger to make contact with their opponent. You may challenge anyone else on the ladder, up to and including 3 places above you.
- New players can join the ladder at any time. Please get in contact with the organiser. The new player may challenge any other player within the bottom 80% of that player list. However, choose carefully whomever you challenge as this is a unique opportunity. If you lose the first match you will then unfortunately start at the bottom of that group.
- The challenger cannot challenge the same player until 2 weeks after the last match between them has been played.
- A player who is challenged must agree to a match with the challenger no later than two weeks after the challenge has been made unless:
a. The challenged player already has 1 other match to play.
b. The challenged player is unable to play due to injury, holiday etc.
c. The two players cannot mutually agree on a date and time for a match.
- Players are responsible for their own tennis balls.
- It is the responsibility of the winner of the match to report the score on the sheets provided on the tennis board.
- The time of the match should be mutually agreed by both players. Therefore if either party is more than 15 minutes late in attending an agreed match, then the late or non-attender loses the match (unless sufficient reason is given). Please decide before playing the game what will happen if it rains or the game has to be abandoned for any reason, i.e. flood lights switching off @ 22:30.
-
How do the positions on the ladder work following the completion of a match?
- If the winner has the higher position, there is no change.
- If the winner has the lower position, he or she takes over the higher position. The loser and all others below the winner move down one position.
NB: The calculation is based on the position of the two players when the match is recorded, not those at the time the challenge is made. It’s not unusual to find the positions of the players have changed during that interval. Please observe good sportsmanship and play your match even if you find your respective positions have changed.
Match format
- Matches will consist of 3 full sets unless both players agree to a champion set tiebreak. If one player wants to play a full set, that wish must be granted.
- The first two sets will be tie-breaker sets
- If a full third set is played, it will be a tie-break set.
NB: As previously stated, at the end of a match the score has to be registered by the winner by completing the score sheet on the notice board, and by changing his or her position on the ladder, if required. Failure to do so may result in a mix up of the ladder. Note how the positions on the ladder system are calculated.
By entering the ladder you agree to publish your contact details freely on the notice board for other members to contact you.
If you wish to join the ladder, please contact me.
Enjoy!!!
Thanks
Roy
